Did we pinch em or did we buy em ?
If we bought em then I can't see why we should give em back . If we pinched em then it's a different matter , but as far as I gather we bought em , so that makes em ours .

They were nicked by the Ottoman Empire, then the Earl of Elgin nicked them - sorry, should say saved them from destruction - and they're in the British Museum so, strictly speaking, they aren't Elgin Marbles at all. They still belong to Greece and should be returned.

The British Museum argues that Elgin was an official diplomat and had acted with the permission of Turkish authorities.

Greek campaigners argue that the Turks were a foreign entity with no validity, acting against the will of the people whom they had invaded,

The sculptures were transported to Britain between 1801 and 1805. They were then sold to the British government and became some of the most storied artefacts in the collection of the British Museum, where they have remained. They went on public display in 1817

So how would it have been sorted out if the Sunak had met the Greek PM ?

In Prime Ministers Questions today, Kier Starmer said to Rishi Sunak

"Greece is a fellow NATO member and economic partner, in view of that would it not have been better to have met the Greek PM"

In reply Rishi just made a jibe at Kier's sucking up to the EU, to which I thought it was a lousy answer, because I would have said

"In view of the fact that Greece is a fellow NATO member and economic partner of the UK, and the situation regarding the war in Gaza and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the position regarding Greece being overwhelmed by immigrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea and landing in Greece, would it not have been better to discuss those subjects, rather than the ownership of some stones which Britain acquired over 200yrs ago" ?

speaking about the migrants in greece

Surfer Tom

But it is such a trivial matter, when there are more important things going on in the world.
